Mechanism of Action

Benzathine Penicillin Sodium is a long-acting form of penicillin G, which exerts its bactericidal action by inhibiting the biosynthesis of bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan during the active multiplication stage of susceptible microorganisms. This inhibition leads to an osmotically unstable cell wall, resulting in cell lysis and bacterial death. However, it is not effective against penicillinase-producing bacteria or organisms with altered penicillin-binding proteins.

Application

Benzathine Penicillin Sodium for Injection is indicated for the treatment and prophylaxis of various infections caused by penicillin-sensitive microorganisms, including:

• Upper Respiratory Tract Infections: Caused by Group A streptococci.
• Venereal Infections: Such as syisphil, yaws, bejel, and pinta.
• Prophylaxis: For rheumatic fever, chorea, rheumatic heart disease, and acute glomerulonephritis.

Dosage Instructions

Benzathine Penicillin Sodium for Injection is administered via intramuscular injection only. The dosage and frequency depend on the specific condition being treated:

• Streptococcal Upper Respiratory Infections: Adults and older children typically receive a single injection of 1.2 million units.
• Syphilis: Primary, secondary, and latent syphilis require a single dose of 2.4 million units. For late syphilis (tertiary and neurosyphilis), 2.4 million units are administered every 7 days for three doses.
• Prophylaxis: For rheumatic fever and glomerulonephritis, 1.2 million units are given once a month.

Storage

Benzathine Penicillin Sodium for Injection should be stored in a refrigerator at a temperature between 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F) to maintain its stability and efficacy. It should not be frozen.
